Our mission is global by definition:

To mobilize the world, by empowering communities and individual citizens everywhere, to anonymously report information about crime.

Who we are

Crime Stoppers International links a network of 800 affiliated and accredited Crime Stoppers chapters worldwide that educate communities about crime and provide ways for citizens to anonymously share information about suspected criminal or illegal activity.

We are a global non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) charity status, governed by a Board of Directors with great breadth and depth of skills and experience.

Our Board is very capably supported by the organization’s executive management team, and both groups receive focused assistance and guidance in strategic planning and operational activity from our specialist Advisory Panel.

Ensuring access to high-quality advice and expertise enhances any organization’s likelihood of success, and we are very privileged to have the support of subject matter experts and leaders from the corporate world, academia, the legal profession, and the law enforcement community. Members of our specialist Advisory Panel are all recognized for their extensive expertise in their respective fields of endeavor - most often, international in nature.

How we began

It began in July 1976 with the fatal shooting of a young filling station attendant on a Friday night in a well-lit and well-traveled area of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Six weeks later, the police had no leads and no-one was willing to talk to them, but the investigating detective believed there had to be a way to solve the case. Somebody knew something, but what could be done to encourage them to come forward?

The detective contacted a local television station for a re-enactment, a special telephone number was promoted that people could call without mentioning their name, and a local community board was established to raise and pay out a $300 reward.

The day after the re-enactment aired, someone called and identified the car leaving the scene at the time of the killing. This person said they had good reason not to be involved in the case. The tip was enough to lead the police to the two men responsible and in under 72 hours the murder was solved. This was the beginning of Crime Stoppers.

With this experience in mind and with the collective help of the public, media and law enforcement, a movement began that has evolved and grown into an extensive network of Crime Stoppers chapters around the world affiliated with Crime Stoppers International.
